You’ve been notified that a complaint has been filed - now what?
Receiving notice of a complaint can feel overwhelming, but understanding the process can help you navigate the steps ahead with confidence. The Board of Veterinary Medicine reviews a wide range of cases, including those related to standard of care, licensure eligibility, inspection deficiencies, business practices, unlicensed activity, diversion, and safety to practice.
Complaints regarding licensees or registrants for all health regulatory boards are received and investigated by the Department of Health Professions’ Enforcement Division. Once an investigation is complete, the investigator forwards an investigative report to the Board for review. All information received and maintained during the course of the investigation is strictly confidential by Virginia law. Virginia Code § 54.1-2400.2.
Following its review of the case, the Board may:
Board decisions are based on the specific facts of each individual case, and the timeframe for the conclusion of a case varies based on the number and complexity of cases under review by the Board. The Department of Health Professions releases quarterly reports regarding disciplinary case processing times, which can be found on its website.

As shown above, the majority of cases reviewed by the Board this year have been closed with no finding of a violation. Case decisions are sent to the licensee or registrant at their address of record on file with the Board.
